How do I become a member of the core team?
- Must be at least a college sophomore
- Provide two letters of character reference
- Read the Diocesan Child Protection Policy (see above)
- Download, complete, and submit the application form (see above)
- Interview with Deacon Dominic
- Undergo a criminal background check
Background checks are conducted by the Jefferson County Sheriff's department at the jail on State Route 7 in Steubenville. If you have lived in Ohio for the past 5 years, you only need a BCI background check the cost of which is $35.00. If you have not lived in Ohio for the past 5 years, you need both a BCI and FBI background check the cost of which is $70.00. These costs are picked up by Steubenville Life Teen.
Once you have completed the first three steps and have been selected as a core team candidate, contact Sargeant Clark at (740) 283-8600 and schedule a time to be finger printed. Before going to the jail, contact Deacon Dom so that a check can be cut to cover your costs. Keep in mind that it may take a few days to get the check cut.
- Undergo the next scheduled Diocesan Decree on Child Protection/Safe Environment training program
I want to participate, but not be on the core team.
Do I still need a background check?
It depends on the level of participation. According to the Child Protection Policy, only those who have, "regular, significant contact with children" (Section One, B.1. Policy) are required to undergo criminal background checks. For the sake of clarity, this contact will mean more than once a month. This does not include Adoration or Mass which are public events. This does include Life Nights and other Life Teen activities.
